A team headed by David Brook at the Masachusetts Institute of Technology identifies the gene responsible for Myotonic Dystrophy (DM), subsequently reclassified as Myotonic Dystrophy Type 1 (DM1).

Dr. Hans Steinert at Leipzig University publishes the first description of Dystrophia Myotonica (DM), more commonly known as Myotonic Dystrophy (DM), as a distinct form of Muscular Dystrophy.
